Toby ate my watch band the other day. This is why I don’t spend more than $70 on a watch. I’m no watch collector. I honestly don’t understand how some watches can cost thousands of dollars, and I’m too afraid to ask. I still have the case, so I could buy new bands if I wanted to, or make it a time piece. Or just buy a new watch.

Kinja'd!!!

I never initially considered an Applewatch. Most of the reasoning is the cost, and the anxiety of having a very high tech/fragile thing on my wrist. I discovered I have a decent amount of Verizon credit, so acquiring an Applewatch through them will actually be cheap. If I do their two month payment plan, it comes to about $12-20/ month. I don’t even know where to look or compare between the versions. 3rd gen? 4th gen? Do I need the Nike version? Will my fat fingers even work on the screen? Do I even want a smart watch to tell me how unhealthy I am? No idea.

Kinja'd!!!

My other option is to find another mid-priced watch. I’m thinking anywhere from $75-$120. I am a simple, but picky watch guy. I like it to be a dark theme, mostly black. Rubber/silicone watch band because I sweat a lot, and have had bad experiences with cloth/leather bands. I don’t like the complex looking faces like Breitling. For reference, my previous watch was a Diesel Watch. Found it on a random site for $65.

Kinja'd!!!

I had my eye on Swatch. Their black watches look sharp, simple, and right in my price range. The case size is smaller than the Diesel I wore previously, but that’s not a deal breaker. I don’t know anything about the brand, so I can’t confirm quality or reliability.

Kinja'd!!!

What do you guys think? Cough up the dough and become part of the smartwatch trend? Or settle and stay analog?

I bought a Samsung s3 frontier since it is round and looks like a classic watch. If apple made a round normal looking watch I would of considered one.

The Samsung is a little limited when paired with an iPhone

Analog all day. I wear this one, pretty sure its a knockoff but I beat it up, wear it wrecking, swimming, etc.

Or the tried and true Nixon Time Teller.

If I go the smartwatch route, it’d be the Apple Watch. Just for that reason

Swatch is a good choice, has always been a price friendly quality watch. I have owned many of them since I was a kid, and they have always stood up to crashes, hard impacts, dirt, dust, water and grime. The bands are interchangeable, but will snap as easy as any other watch.

Unless you are a ‘techie’ I wouldn’t recommend the Apple watch. I am not a techie and t he only feature I use besides telling time and quickly reading text messages, is the ‘ping my iphone’ feature.  But that is a really cheap price so maybe go for it.

I hated the idea of the Apple watch, then I got one and it’s amazing! It’s not as fragile as you think. I wear it all the time, mountain biking, working on the cars, in the pool...

It’s also a motivator. When I see that I haven’t been active I feel like a real fatty and I’ll do something about it.

The best part is that it has really cut back on my phone “use”. I don’t “need” my phone for anything now so I’m not constantly pulling it out of my pocket to check on nothing 20 times per day.

I can make calls, text, and pay for things and that is all I really need.

I initially hated the idea of it too. I mainly use a watch to tell time, and MAYBE as an accessory when dressed up. I don’t have apple pay set up, so paying for things with it is not a major factor.

Every Apple Watch owner  I’ve spoken to about reliability says, “Just get Apple Care, you’ll be covered.” Which adds more to the already costly watch.

Just use your phone to tell time. Watches snag on things and leave funny tan lines.

I wore only Nixons for few years til I switched to the Orient, solely because I wanted some lume... but the lume sucks on this thing. It’s a little dressier than the Nixons and I can switch the bands, so that’s nice. The Nixons are so cheap and so durable you can just replace every 2-3 years when the battery dies.  I do have a Shinola if I want to be fancy but I don’t wear it often.

I daily wear a Casio analogue-digital hybrid. It’s from their Waveceptor line. It’s solar powered and synced to a radio time signal, meaning it never needs to be reset or have the battery swapped. It cost me $120, but the line runs from $40 to $300+ on Amazon. Mine is a traditional silver w/metal band but they make ones that match your needs:

Get the 4, all the reviews say it’s a big improvement over the 3. No idea if the Nike+ version is worth anything, but I’d guess probably not much. I don’t wear a watch (not a watch person) , though I know a bunch of people with the 4 and they all like it a lot.

Quick read shows the 4 being “twice as fast” as the 3, 50% louder speaker, and an opportunity for an ECG/EKG heart rate monitor. Nowhere do they mention the advantages of a Nike version. I’l inquire at a Verizon store and see what they have to say between the two.

Solar powered. It has a receiver that picks up the universal time clock signal, thus the “radio” part of the description.

I wore a G-Shock for years before expanding my collection. I tend to favor stainless/blue and black silicone. Here are some of my favorites:

Kinja'd!!!

My first G-Shock lasted over 10 years on one battery. The outside case finally fell apart. I bought an identical replacement but lost it.

Kinja'd!!!

After that, I started wearing a Fossil, similar to this one, but a wee bit nicer finish. Even so, it was a cheap watch and I wasn’t too fond of it, especially once the back started corroding.

Kinja'd!!!

My wife bought me a Redline as a replacement. I really like this watch, but I’m always worried about water infiltration since the adjustment has a tiny o-ring for a seal and I’m not convinced it’s ever really sealed up tight.

Kinja'd!!!

My kids recently bought me a Samsung Gear S3 Frontier . I’m bad about keeping it charged, so it’s somewhat frustrating. Being a smart watch, it does lots of cool things, but the features I use most often are the time zones and notifications. The time zone feature is handy when you’re flying since most times are referenced back to “universal” time and the watch makes it easy to convert weather reports back to local time. I don’t have any experience with Apple watches, so I can’t compare them to the S3.

There are times when I really miss having an analog watch, but I’m not going to carry two watches with me while travelling. So, I’ll stick with the smart watch until it breaks.

I really want to like the idea of an Apple Watch and have thought about buying one, but always get stage fright before actually doing so. Maybe someday.

Anyways, when I’m not rocking my nicer watches I pretty much wear Fossil’s. They’ve always treated me well and hold up to abuse. Not sure if they’ll have any in the style you like but worth checking out. Here’s their black models.

Swatch would be a solid choice as well.

I’m a “warranties are never worth it in the long run ” guy (cars not included in this thought process) . I have a bunch of apple products I’ve only had trouble with phones and those issues have been 50% my fault and 50% dead batteries (I’m on battery #3 in my iPhone7). I also fix them myself.

Save the money on apple care and get a pair of airpods.

$12-20/mo for how many months? there seems to be something inherently wrong with ‘financing’ a watch, imo.

i’ve had some form of seiko automatic for the past 7 or so years.

24 months. I forgot to mention that. They normally take the MSRP of the device and split it into 24 month payments. For example, the top of the line Apple Watch 4 is about $750, or $31.25/month. I have Verizon credit I can u se towards a new device. The Watch I was looking at (4 th gen aluminum 40 mm case) costs $500, or $20/month. With my credit, it brings it down to $380, or $15.80

I really don’t like smart watches because I look at my phone too much as it is—it’s nice to look at something mechanical to check the time rather than another screen.

You could just replace the band—plenty of good options online. Since you want a watch but aren’t really a “watch guy” who would enjoy setting an automatic from time to time, my advice is to get  a Seiko Solar or Citizen Eco-Drive, where you’ll never even have to replace the battery.

Skip the Nike unless you are a runner. 4 is the way to go now. I have the 3 and originally got it because I traveled did field work. It allowed me to leave my phone in the truck and still be able to glance down when a notification came in to see if it was a phone call, email, text that needed attention without me having to pull out my phone every time . I was constantly waiting for calls or messages during this period of my career. Now it is not near as important to me to be attached to my phone but I still feel naked without my apple watch on. I was never good about wearing a watch before this. The heart rate is very nice, the sleep tracking (currently through 3rd party app) is useful. I have friends that pull out their phone every time they here a chime, with the watch you can glance down or after the conversation swipe down on you watch to see if anything needs attention. The most useful thing I get out of it on a daily basis is the “Hey Siri” function. I can tell it to text my wife, set a timer, turn on the back porch light or set a reminder in an hour without messing with my phone. I was initially concerned with battery life since with my phone I charge it over night but I wanted the watch as a sleep tracker. The watch charges so fast that it is not a concern. I take it off to shower and easily gain 50% charge during that time. When I wake up in the morning I’ll set it on there while I make coffee and get ready for work and between that short daily charge time I have never run below 10% for any extended time, much less had it die on me. I was very aware of the cost of the item on my wrist for the first 3 months but I have bumped, banged, dinged it so many times in the last 2 years or so I’ve had it and it has some light scratches on the screen which are barely noticeable with a blank screen unless you really scrutinize it, the screen brightness is so good that they are invisible when the screen is on. I do work with 2 people who have broken their screens but those were direct hits by heavy items while off their wrist. I guess this is a long way of saying it is worth the expense.

Otherwise, you really can’t go wrong with Seiko, Orient, or Bulova, they all sell very good quality for a decent price.
